Variable life insurance differs from whole life insurance in that it offers clients the freedom to invest in a diversified portfolio, including fixed interest, equities, hedge funds, real estate, private placements and alternative investments, in addition to its primary life insurance investment.

The value of the policy accumulates on a variable basis depending on the performance of the investment portfolio. The amount payable after the death of the insured is dependent solely on this performance as the policy’s value accumulates on a variable basis.

Substantial tax advantages are also associated with variable policies as the cash value of the policy is not taxed until the policy is redeemed, allowing profits to grow tax-deferred.
